Bastrop Opera House holds community theatre auditions for actors of high
school age and older. The Halloween offering tryouts will be on Monday,
September 17 at 7 p.m.
Male and female actors are being sought for ghost stories presented as
one-act plays. Three or four of these playlets comprise an evening's
entertainment beginning on October 26 playing Fridays and Saturdays through
November 17.
The material will feature pirate tales of Washington Irving or Japanese
ghost stories and require large casts to produce. No formal training
is required, but candidates must be willing to commit to a rigorous five-week
rehearsal schedule.
The plays subject matter have a general audience
rating.
Because the plays do not rely on sets and
costumes, the actors will need to devote themselves to developing their
imaginations to achieve these fantastical characters.
Chester Eitze, Opera House Executive Director, said, "I hope that local
talent will turn out for the auditions since the material is well-written
and, after all, just think of playing eighteenth century pirates or thousand
year old Japanese demons!"
Actors will audition from the scripts.
Being considered are two play collections by Eric Coble.
Male and female actors are needed for both, but the roles may not be cast
as gender-specific. Some roles might involve musical abilities.
One collection will be performed this fall.
The characters in both pieces are very exaggerated,
somewhat humorous, but very scary ultimately. These roles are best
performed when performers give in to their most fantastical imaginations.
Mentally and physically demanding.

Gold in the Bones - Three
haunted pirate tales by Washington Irving
Synopsis: Peter De Groodt, the only surviving member of Captain Kidd's
terrifying crew, invites us to follow him and discover where all Kidd's
pirates' ill-gotten gold is buried...while telling us of the cruel fates
that met the men and women who sought it out before us. Guests from
Gibbet Island, Wolfert Webber, and The Devil and Tom Walker present three
thrilling forgotten tales of dreams, madness, greed and redemption in the
distinctive Washington Irving style.
-
In a Grove - four Japanese
ghost stories
Synopsis: Obosan, a traditional Japanese priest, steps forward from
the darkness. He explains that where we now see a grove of trees,
bushes and grassy hills, was once the village of Kogisu---and Obosan was
once the village priest. Where did all the people go? What
happened to the homes and shops and pathways?
Obosan promises to answer all of these questions in four tales as he takes
us back in time hundreds of years to watch the supernatural history---and
ultimate destruction---of an entire village.
